“It’s not just for dorm rooms anymore: the stylish design, low cost and ingenious construction of lots of today’s knock-down furniture is making it hugely popular.

Its first advantage is, of course, immediate gratification. There’s no waiting for delivery, it’s flat-packed and relatively easy to transport, and because you put it together, it costs less than showroom furniture. But to make it worthwhile, you’ll need a plan of attack!

Find out the measurements and estimated weight of the piece you want. Make sure it will fit where it’s to go (and in the car), and that you have enough help to transport and assemble it, especially if glass or mirrors are involved.

Leave yourself plenty of time (alone, if necessary!), read the directions all the way through first, and lay out the pieces, checking them with the parts list, over the cardboard or a carpet to avoid scratches. Finish what you start, or parts could get lost. Have a hammer, screw drivers and a power drill handy, because even if the directions don’t call for them, they’ll usually save you some time.
