SINCE THERE IS A HARBOR FREIGHT TOOLS NEARBY, I WENT TO THE STORE AND PURCHASED THE TOOL FOR $7.99 PLUS TAX. IT WORKED LIKE A CHARM! IT IS A SET BUT YOU ONLY NEED THE 1/2 INCH EXTRACTOR FOR THIS JOB. USE A 3/4 INCH SOCKET AND YOU MAY HAVE TO ENLARGE THE HOLE IN THE GROUT BASE SLIGHTLY TO ACCEPT THE SOCKET. I ALSO USED A T-HANDLE IN ORDER TO APPLY THE TORQUE EVENLY. IT TOOK A BIT OF STRENGTH TO GET THE BROKEN PIECE STARTED, BUT ONCE STARTED IT CAME OUT WITHOUT DAMAGING THE IRON RISER PIPE THREADS.

Seems like the broken shower arm is a fairly common problem. WTF? no 5/8" nipple extractors on the market?

I saw this suggestion from another post and it worked like a charm, after half the day was spent trying to use 1/2 inch nipple extractors (Harbor Freight/Home Depot), hacksawing the broken threads out, nothing was working.

Super suggestion on the file! I had purchased the nipple extractor kit after failing to get one from Ace Hardware. It did not work. Read about the file. 5 minutes later all fixed! THANKS for an awesome suggestion.

Number 10 file. Tap tapered end into fitting, with a hammer. Harder than you think. Crescent wrench, turn slowly CCW. Just did it today. File was $7 at home depot.

I tried two kinds of nipple extractors and the tapered file, none worked for me. Then I tried the 1/2" pipe tap and no problem! After tapping, even with teflon tape, I had a leak from the joint and had to use pipe dope as well to seal it completely.

The file absolutely did the trick. Brilliant!!! Thanks to #bobvila and everyone on this forum

I had the same problem, and kept coming back to this thread to try and solve it. I imagine everyone has some difference in the level of broken, stuck, and how much thread is left so effectiveness of the tools will vary. I had about the size of a men's wedding ring left in the thread.

In the end the 1/2 in. pipe tap was the winner and left the remaining thread in the elbow intact. It took a couple times to get it seated just right, and then some rotational force. I also used pipe dope just in case when threading the new arm on.

- File. Felt like I was able to get some traction, but ultimately didn't grab quite enough, and ended up scraping. I could see how this could work though.
- Outdoor nipple extractor cut off to fit. Might be too soft a metal, and also would not grab enough.
- Internal pipe wrench didn't fit since the walls of the pipe are thinner
