A new fridge is a big purchase, and there will be a small fee to dispose of the old one, but some electrical utilities are actually giving rebates to customers who replace their old clunkers with new, energy-efficient models. The Department of Energy’s website, energy.gov, has a database of incentives by state so you can check what’s available where you are.

Hey, even without the rebate, buying an energy star model makes sense. A mid-size fridge more than 10 years old can cost $100 a year to run. Energy-star models cut that in half.
